Plato girls’ basketball has its third head coach in as many years this season with Wesley Shaw taking over.

The cupboard is far from bare in Shaw’s first season with Kelsey Todd and Cara Couch returning for their junior seasons. Both were named first-team all-conference last year. Couch led the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game along with rebounding at 6.7 rpg. Todd was just behind her in scoring at 12.8 ppg.

“Cara Couch and Kelsey Todd will be two players that will have to take on a larger scoring role for us this year,” Shaw said. “I look for Couch and Todd to be our leaders and go to players this season on both ends of the floor.”

Classmates Ramsey Crews, Shelby Wilson and Brooklyn Atterberry round out a deep junior class for Plato. Crews is a strong rebounder who averaged 6.5 per game last season while also contributing 7.4 points per game.

Hanna Cannon is the team’s lone senior this year. She averaged 5.6 points per game last season.

Shaw will look to a large group of four freshmen to potentially contribute on the varsity level including Brenna Couch and Kaylee Copley.

“So far the girls have been very receptive, but we as a team and myself still have a lot to learn and a lot of new things with it being my first year with the Plato Lady Eagles,” Shaw said.

Plato opens the season on Nov. 23 at Salem.

“Overall the team is athletic and we have size and length. I believe we will have the opportunity to be deep this season and our bench will play a big role in our success as a team this season,” Shaw said. “We will emphasize defense and rebounding to help our offense get into more transition opportunities. I think we have the opportunity to be a tough team this season and be competitive in our district and conference.”
