Licking boys basketball had a young squad last year that won 12 games and finished below .500 for the first time since 2012. It also snapped a streak of five straight 20-win seasons.

Last year’s youth has turned into this year’s experience with four returning starters.

Wilson Murray, Bryce Corely and Landon Medlock will be team leaders this year.

Murray earned first-team all-conference honors after he led the team with 19.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.4 steals per game. Corely was second on the team in scoring at 10.2 ppg to go with 4.3 rpg.

Licking will also look for a big impact from Conner McLeod, Keaton Rinne and JB Huff. That trio has developed into impactful role players and physical presences.

Nikki Hood and Cade Richards are moving up to the varsity level. Hood brings strong three-point shooting.

“We are trying to develop a culture of toughness with the players, both physically and mentally,” Licking head coach Jess Ross said. “We felt like last year we just weren’t tough enough. We have set expectations for our players and the team as far as what we want them to do. We have done well in the weight room and grown mentally as a group.”

Licking will open the season on Nov. 23 at Houston.

“Our expectations are to play hard all the time and be good people, teammates and students. This is an area that we have been building on since the beginning of last season,” Ross said. “This year’s team has an opportunity to be very successful if they work together. They will be pushed by a very solid group of younger players in practice that only increases their potential to excel.”
