Greenwood girls soccer was a young squad last year without any seniors playing in 2019. The Lady Blue Jays’ lone senior missed the season with an ACL injury. They will look to improve this year after going winless last season.

Leading the charge will be returning all-district selections Annabelle Sonnemaker and Mallory Montgomery.

Sonnemaker will see time up top this season.

“Annabelle Sonnemaker just has talent and drive. She had such success because her drive to be better each game; combine that with her talent and you’ve got a real player,” Greenwood head coach Shelby Setzer said. “Annabelle’s best assets are her determination and vision. She truly understands the game, she is dedicated to performing, and she has the vision to put it all together.”

Montgomery will hold things down on defense.

“Mallory Montgomery is one of the most coachable kids I have. She is always open to instruction and then can immediately apply that to a game. She’s an athletic girl who has been able to adapt quickly to the game of soccer,” Setzer said. “Mallory’s best assets are fortitude and quick play. She is a tough player who does not get rattled easily; she plays quick and simple, and it is very effective for her.”

Setzer has a trio of seniors in Sage Vahldick (goalkeeper), Anna McNay (defense) and Jessica Parrish (midfield) that will provide leadership and production on the field.

“Our biggest strength will be that these girls have played together already since we did not graduate any senior that was able to play. Their heart and determination will be our biggest strength this year. We have a strong freshman class that will be providing us with some skilled players,” Setzer said.

Setzer will look for her girls to get off to fast starts this season.

“(We want to) score first and keep a lead. Last year we struggled with finishing, and that has to change this year,” Setzer said. “Overall, our team’s expectations is to have a winning season and finish our chances when we get them.”

Greenwood opens the season on Mar. 31 at home against Willard.
