Nine area wrestlers bring home titles from Kinloch Classic

A trio of Terminator Wrestling Academy products earned championships at the 52nd Annual Kinloch Classic at Parkview on Saturday.

Branson’s Kyshin Isringhuasen (113 pounds), Ozark’s Braxton Strick (126) and Buffalo’s Blake Daher (170) each honed their craft during their formative years at the Terminators’ Pleasant Hope and Buffalo facilities. They enjoyed cheering each other on to titles in Springfield’s tradition-rich mid-season tournament.

“It’s nice to have my fellow Terminator teammates doing well in high school,” Daher said. “I take pride in that. All the Terminator kids I’ve been teammates with, I root for them all the time and like to be able to talk to them during tournaments.”

Isringhausen and Strick captured Kinloch gold medals as freshmen.

“All the hard work we did as Terminators, it’s paid off,” Strick said. “Whenever (a Terminator teammate) is wrestling an Ozark kid, I try not to say anything and just let them wrestle.”

“The Terminators did a lot for me,” Isringhausen said. “I owe a lot of my success to them.”

Jackson ran away with the team championship, while Raymore-Peculiar was runner-up and Jefferson City Helias third. St. Clair 120 champion Brock Woodcock was named the Classic’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Southwest Missouri wrestlers totaled nine individual championships with plenty of compelling storylines:

Isringhausen adding glory to family’s name

Isringhuasen has started his prep career with a 20-0 record that has included tournament championships at Union, Neosho and now the Kinloch.

He beat Columbia Hickman’s Ethan Barr 5-1 in the 113 final.

Isringhuasen is a third-cousin of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jason Isringhuasen. The latter has vacationed at Table Rock Lake over the years, but Kyshin doesn’t think he has ever met Jason.

“If I have met him I don’t remember it,” Kyshin said. “I think it’s pretty cool I’m related to him. I’ve talked to him on-line. He said a couple comments on some posts that my Dad and I posted. Hopefully, one day I can meet him.”

Isnrighausen has been wrestling since he was 6 years old. He didn’t play baseball very long.

“I played baseball for a couple years when I was 7 and 8 years old,” he said. “But then I stopped. I lost my love for it.”

Isringhuasen isn’t dismissing the thought of remaining undefeated throughout his freshman season and becoming only the second state champ at Branson. He’ll have a tough test in the COC against another former Terminator teammate, Nixa sophomore Payton Moore, a state runner-up last season.

“I’m definitely trying,” Isringhausen said of staying unbeaten. “I like to win them all. There are some pretty good people out there. I’ll have to keep training and see what I can do.”

Strick makes a name for himself

Strick upset the 126 No. 1 seed, Jackson senior Alec Bailey, in the semifinal round and routed Branson’s Christian Cartwright 10-2 in the final.

“Rankings and seeds, it’s all just a number. It doesn’t matter to me. I just wrestle,” said Strick, who is 24-4 “The semifinal match was a good win for me. Since he’s a senior and I’m a freshman, it’s good for my confidence.

“I was happy with the way (the final) went,” he added. “I feel I wrestled to the best of my abilities in that match. I probably could have scored some more points. But it’s all right because I got the win by a decent amount.”

Ortiz wins premier matchup

In perhaps the best match of the finals, McDonald County’s Oscar Ortiz beat Rolla’s Zach Fennell 5-2 for the 132 championship.

Ortiz, 23-2, has medaled at State three times, including one championship. Fennell, 22-3, has also medaled three times at State, with his highest finish being third.

They were tied at 2-all when Fennell began the third period by opting to give Ortiz a free escape so the two would be on their feet. Ortiz ended up getting the takedown Fennell was seeking.

“Yeah, actually it did (surprise me),” Ortiz said of the free escape. “In my personal opinion, I feel I’m best on my feet. But if you want to go big, you’ve got to go for it sometimes.

“I knew he was going to try something. I just worked harder and was ready to get more points. I never want to stop scoring. I didn’t get to my shots as much as I wanted to. I’ll have to go back to the practice room and work on them.”

Ortiz shook off injuries to his neck, a shoulder and a bicep.

“I was out of practice all week after I hurt my neck at the beginning of the week,” he said. “I hurt my shoulder yesterday and today I hurt my bicep. It was a tough tournament, but fun. Now, it’s time to rest, get some ice and get ready for next week.”

Strausbaugh eases to title

Rogersville two-time state champion Jay Strausbaugh improved to 23-0 and claimed his second Kinloch championship by taking the 138 title.

Strausbaugh beat Jefferson City Helias’ Alexsey Salaz 6-2 in the final.

Strausbaugh owns a 162-13 record.

O’Connell keeps unbeaten streak going

Republic senior Jonathan O’Connell improved to 24-0 while winning the 145 championship. He beat Hickman’s Jacob Waldron 6-0 in the final.

“There may have been a few times on my feet I seemed a little shaky. But I felt in control pretty much the whole time,” O’Connell said. “I’m proud how I wrestled. He’s a tough kid, I’ll take the win.”

It was a fulfilling title for O’Connell, who was fifth at the Kinloch as a sophomore and third as a junior.

“I’ve been coming here since I was in the fifth grade and watching my brother wrestle in this tournament,” O’Connell said, referring to his older brother, 2015 Republic graduate Brandon O’Connell. “I’ve always looked up to him. Me winning here and him not, there’s that brotherly competition that I feel satisfied with.”

Republic’s jump from Class 3 to Class 4 this season isn’t overly concerning to O’Connell.

“Class 3 or Class 4, you’ve got to wrestle with the same mindset,” he said. “Yeah, Class 4 is notorious for having those Kansas City schools. But in Class 3 we had Kansas City schools, too.”

Republic’s Wyatt George won the 106 championship. He upped his record to 21-1 with a 2-0 victory in the final over St. Clair’s Ryan Meek.

Snider reaches milestone on way to title

After recording his 100th career win in his first match Friday, Marshfield’s Will Snider took the 160 championship by beating a familiar foe. Snider downed Ozark’s Kale Conway 3-0 in the final.

The two also were in the same pool, with Snider pinning Conway on Friday.

“I’ve lost way too many matches that I went in thinking it was a write-off to ever adapt a mentality like that again,” Snider said. “I knew it was going to be a tough match. He’s a strong, athletic kid. I did not feel overly confident. I knew it would be a challenge.”

Snider was pleased to reach the 100-win milestone.

“My freshman year, I had a senior in my weight class named Patrick Wilson. I remember it was a big deal to him and I was so proud of him when he got his 100th win,” Snider said. “It feels good to get to that point with him.”

Snider is 21-1, after going 42-16 last season.

“I’m pleased with the way I’m wrestling, but the season is certainly not anywhere near over and I’m not anywhere near peaking, yet,” Snider said. “I’ll have a lot more matches and harder matches, so I don’t have a true appreciation of myself, yet. I’m pleased with how things are going. But it’s simply too early to tell.

“This is the biggest tournament I’ve ever won,” he added. “I really like this tournament. It means a lot to me to finish where I did.”

Daher’s perseverance paying off

Daher made a strong bid at being named the Most Outstanding Wrestler by pinning four of his five opponents. The only match he didn’t record a fall, he won by injury default.

Daher put Jose Orelana, of Rogers (Arkansas) Heritage on his back in :34 in the 170 final.

Daher, a senior, is 26-0 and on his way to what he hopes will be his first trip to State. Over the past three years, he’s lost two bubble matches at Districts and suffered a torn meniscus that cut short his sophomore season.

“It’s been very disappointing,” Daher said of being so close, yet so far from State. “I really hope this year is my year. I hope I’m able to push through all the adversity and get that state title I’ve been looking to for four years. This is another step toward that state title.”

Tennison second Tiger to win at 285 in three years

Ozark’s Hunter Tennison was pleased to win a title at the same tournament and at the same 285 weight class former teammate Jace Gorn did two years ago.

“It’s exciting to come here and get first place,” Tennison said. “Jace came here and did phenomenal. I wanted to fall in his footsteps because I am in his weight class.”

Tennison downed Ray-Pec’s Tyson King 6-4 in the final to up his record to 24-5.
