Athlete of the Week: Kyle Evers, Riverview Christian

Basketball sometimes looks easy for Riverview Christian senior Kyle Evers.

“I’ve never seen anybody work as hard as he works,” said Riverview Christian Head Coach Tim Brooks.

That hard work helped Kyle break the program’s single game record with 52 points.

It’s something even his coach didn’t expect

“50 points, no I didn’t see that coming,” Brooks said.

Just a few years ago, nobody would’ve seen it coming, because Kyle wasn’t exactly a basketball stand out until Brooks, who’s also Kyle’s uncle, approached him five years ago.

“He’s like ‘you’re going to play basketball for my team.’ I said ‘sweet, what’s basketball?’” Kyle said.

That’s when Kyle first moved to Forsyth, Missouri from Australia.

“Going from a place in Australia, where I was there wasn’t much show business and then going to a place right by Branson, where there’s like show biz and all this craziness. But it’s been super cool,” Kyle said.

Now sometimes Kyle plays the star of the show when the Eagles hit the hardwood, but that didn’t happen overnight.

“There were many times where I discovered rules by breaking them. First [pass] I got, I took like seven steps and didn’t know to dribble, so [that was a] travel,” Kyle said.

“There were those moments where he’d come over to me and say ‘I didn’t know that was a rule’,” Brooks said.

So, knowing his team’s need for a point guard, Kyle practiced, and studied the game.

“He’d go over and read over famous point guards from over the years or watch videos of point guards over the years,” Brooks said. “I’ve never had a player do that ever.”

Now young Eagles may want to study Kyle’s game

He leads the varsity team in scoring and in the hallways at school.

“Something you do in basketball one night will last that night,” Kyle said. “Some character you build, relationships you show, character you’re able to display to other schools will last forever.”

“To me, that’s more important than winning or losing the basketball game,” Brooks said. “I love having guys on the team, leading, that think the exact same thing.”

Leaders like Kyle who prove it’s not where you’ve been or what you’ve done

Rather, it’s where you’re going that means the most.
