BUFFALO —  John Mark Hale has gotten used to being called by ONE title.

“Once they started calling me coach, it felt good.”

Hale has been in charge of the football team for 46 years. He coaches defensive backs, receivers, and kickoff coverage.

“I love the game of football. I haven’t really wanted to leave a locker room yet.”

Off the field, Hale goes by a few other titles: groundskeeper, water boy, and even caretaker.  He spent hours this week painting new lines on the field.

Hale also loads up coolers with water for the pregame meal and halftime.  By doing this, the rest of his coaching staff can focus on their day jobs.

“They teach school all day. I don’t. I can get up and watch The Price is Right and drink coffee. If I can give them two hours more at home, it’s worth it to me. From my own personal coaching career, I regret that I didn’t spend more time with my kids and my wife.”

It’s all work he’s never been asked to do.

“I’ll start tonight when the game is over. I start doing laundry. I’ve never been told, go do laundry.”

It’s laundry and game film all weekend – then whatever else the team needs.

“It’s just trying to stay ahead of what we need.”

Always putting the team first.

“I just enjoy it. I love every second of it. I don’t know how else to phrase what I’m lucky to do.”
