Conway volleyball hasn’t finished above .500 since 2011, but that could change this season according to coach Tammy Beckler.

“This could be a breakout year. A lot of pieces are coming together. I have and amazing group of kids who are coming together and are wanting to start doing what it takes to be a great team,” Beckler said.

Alexa Highbee is one of the top returning players for Conway. She was a force at the net leading the Lady Bears in blocks (25) and finishing second in kills (91).

“She (Highbee) is aggressive and loves to compete. She is a mature player and hard worker,” Beckler said. “She is a go-to girl. Her hitting is much more consistent and her blocking is really coming around.”

Juniors Lakyn Shelton and Abbey Nedom will be key returning players on the front row.

Freshmen Gibby Beckler and Callie Cornelison will make an immediate varsity impact this year. Beckler will help with setting and be an outside hitter. Cornelison will lead the back row and defensive effort.

Katie Myers will also pick up setting duties in addition to her duties in the middle. Junior Journie Pedersen will be a key defensive player as well.

“We will be young, but I don’t think we play like we aren’t experienced. They are learning to play at a high intensity level,” Beckler said. “We need to go out every night and have the mindset that we can win. This will be hard for a team that hasn’t seen a lot of wins. This summer, we focused on errors versus points and we saw dramatic changes as they started to work on little things that earn points and eliminate silly mistakes. By our last shootout, we were getting more plusses than minuses and winning more than we were losing.”

Conway won just five matches last year, but Beckler thinks that double-digit wins are within reach this season.

“I think we can double our wins from last year and maybe lots more,” Beckler said. “We have to stay healthy. This is a young, fun team that is hungry and passionate about the game and their team.”

Conway opens the season on Sept. 3 at home against Mountain Grove.
