Skyline softball went 10-11 last season. The Lady Tigers won the opening round of their district tournament before falling to eventual Class 1 Third Place finisher Lincoln in the semifinals.

This year they enter the season with a new coach in Shawna Barrow this season.

“We have a big group coming out for this spring season. I expect impacts to be made from seniors all the way to freshman on the varsity team. Again, we are just getting started so we are still trying to see what best fits us as a team but I do see seniors-freshman making huge impacts on the varsity team,” Barrow said. “We will be young in the circle, but have pressed to them to let their speed on defense do the work for them and on offense. Again, if we simple this game out and do the “little things right on the field, these girls will do something with their season. They need to continue to grind day in and day out like they did during off-season.”

Things start with three seniors in Jenna Carter, Ashton Owen and Bailey DaMitz. Carter and Owen will be key players in the outfield while DaMitz will return to the infield at second base.

The Lady Tigers will be young in the circle with three players in junior Dora Foust, sophomore Kenzie Carver and freshman Angelina Curtis all seeing time throwing the ball.

Hannah Benedict, Samantha Johnson and Kenzie Hash all saw varsity time last year and return this year.

There is a large group of 10 freshman that will have an impact on the varsity squad this season. Ella Dougherty will be a key among that group of freshman as she will be behind the plate at catcher. Keelie Holmes will use her speed up the middle on defense for the Lady Tigers.

“My goals for this season is to really teach the mental side of the game as well as the physical aspect. I think it will be crucial for these girls to really push themselves and their teammates in practice to become a successful team,” Barrow said. “I want them to understand discipline and what they want out of the season. I know they are very excited as so am I and I can’t to see what they accomplish.”

Skyline opens the season on Mar. 17 at the Marionville Tournament.
