Missouri State University president Clif Smart and Director of Athletics Kyle Moats announced that head men’s basketball coach Paul Lusk has been fired after 7 seasons.

“It is particularly important that our men’s basketball season is successful because it is our main revenue sport,” said Smart.  “I’ve had many conversations with the board of directors and have determined a new direction is necessary.”

Lusk was 105-121 in his tenure including an 18-15 record this season following Friday’s MVC Tournament quarterfinal loss to Southern Illinois.

“From a personal and professional standpoint I greatly appreciate Coach Lusk and his dedication, hard work and commitment during his tenure as head coach,” said Moats.

The former SIU standout player had three winning seasons, but finished no higher than third in the Missouri Valley Conference, which came in his first season.

Lusk will be paid $371,453 in compensation for the one year remaining on his 5-year extension signed in 2014.

Lusk came to MSU in 2011 from Purdue, replacing Cuonzo Martin, who was also a prior Purdue assistant coach.

Associate head coach Corey Gipson will take over as the interim head coach while a committee searches for the new head coach.

A national search will begin immediately comprised of Moats, Casey Hunt, MSU senior associate director of athletics; Rachael Dockery, MSU legal counsel; Ed Pinegar, community member; Joe Turner, community member; and Dr. James Satterfield, faculty member.

“Collectively we will make the best decision for the future of Bears basketball and begin the next era with much anticipation,” said Moats.

Missouri State advanced to the MVC Tournament semifinals twice — 2014 and 2017 — during Lusk’s tenure. His best season was the 2013-14 campaign when he led the Bears to a 20-13 overall record and a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).
