Gainesville returns its four leading scorers from last season’s team that finished 9-18. Coach Matt Powell enters his third season as head coach of Gainesville with seven players who saw action in at least 19 games last year returning.

Senior Brodie Chapman is the led the team with 12.2 points per game last year. He also added 4.8 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals per contest.

Sophomore Jaxon Britt just missed out on the 10-point barrier at 9.5 points per game in his freshman season.

Senior Wyatt Wilson posted five points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season. Fellow senior Justin Wallace and juniors Garrett Morgan and John Hossman also return this season.

Junior Cody Donley played in 19 varsity games last year as a defensive stopper and will see an expanded role this year. Sophomore Ben Pointer will also see more varsity minutes.

Gainesville will be balanced with any of these weapons capable of a big night.

“We have several players that could have a big night for us at any point,” Powell said. “Our mentality as a team has to change a bit to where that is OK with everyone.”

Gainesville plays in a tough Summit Conference and district. Powell hopes a strong offseason will help his Bulldogs this year.

“I thought we had a really good summer. We really made some big strides last year in terms of competing in more games than the year before. This year we are hoping that our progress can lead to a few more wins,” Powell said.

Gainesville opens the season on Nov. 21 at Bakersfield.
