2017-18 Winter Preview: Cabool Boys Basketball

Cabool let the 3-point shots rain often on its way to a 15-12 record last season, as the Bulldogs knocked down 191 from beyond the arc.

The key piece of that attack was the now graduated Jon Smith after making 110 3-pointers in his senior season. He averaged 17.8 points per game to lead the team. Fellow senior Colten Hensley added in 17.6 points per game along with 30 3-point makes of his own.

“Colten and Jon are a huge loss to us on both ends of the floor,” Cabool head coach Brad Shockley said. “Offensively they carried the load for us, and defensively they shouldered a ton there also. Plus, add in that Colten was our leading rebounder, and we have all kinds of holes to fill.”

The graduated seniors took with them 71-percent of the Bulldogs’ scoring and 77-percent of their 3-point makes.

Brett Vonallmen will be looked to for leadership and production in his senior season after averaging 8.6 points per game and knocking down 37 3-point shots last year.

“Brett has grown up this past year and we are looking for him to step up and fill some of the holes. He worked hard this summer to get stronger with the ball,” Shockley said. “Brett will have to help run the floor and score for us this year and he is very capable of filling the role of our main outside threat.”

Fellow seniors Titus Atkins and Jordan Primazon will also be relied on for increased production coming off of seasons that saw them average 5.3 points and 3.9 points per game. Atkins will be the Bulldogs’ big man down low while Primazon will play both inside and out.

Mathew Luerssen , Saxton Green, Brayden Grisham, and DJ Krambeck, are all players from last year’s junior varsity that will be looking for playing time this year on varsity.

The success of Cabool’s season will largely depend on how the new leaders step into their roles. Cabool will also adjust its style of play to fit the new personnel.

“We graduated almost all of our offense last year and the leaders on the floor for us. This year we are looking for some new players to step up and want to fill those roles,” Shockley said. “We focused our game from the outside in last year and this year our goal in to get it inside first. Our goal is to go out every-night work hard, keep our turnovers down, and try to compete. We are going from a very fast paced style to a much slower one with players hopefully ready to step up. My expectation is that we will settle in to our new style and work to be competitive every night.”

Cabool opens the season on Nov. 28 at home against Seymour.
