After going 11-17 in 2016, the Lady Cardinals must replace its top two leaders in kills, digs and assists from last season. But, longtime coach Rhonda Moore believes this group is up to the challenge, led by a solid core of juniors.

“We definitely lost a lot to graduation but these sophomores made big impacts last year,” said Moore. “They are more than ready to step into the leadership roles and we’re excited about our new look and youthful squad.”

The three juniors leading the way all have starting experience from last fall, which will be pivotal in the loaded COC Large.

Aubre Conway-Owen and Allary Liberatore will anchor Webb City at the net. Conway-Owen, a 6-foot M/OH, had 85 kills and 19 blocks in 2016 and Liberatore, a 5-foot-10 M/OH, will carry much of the scoring load.

“Aubre is maturing and becoming more consistent with no loss of the powerful kills,” said Moore. “Allary also matured over club season and plays with a little more urgency and higher expectations from herself. This group playing together is fun to watch because they are close off the court too and have played together for a long time. Their trust in each other and expectations of play has helped pull out some games this summer.”

Classmate Jaleigh James will return to her spot on the back row as the libero. The 5-foot-2 defensive specialist is Webb City’s leader in digs among returners and had five games of double-digit digs, including a season-high 17 against Mountain Home.

Moore is also expecting 5-foot-9 junior setter Abby Brownfield to make an impact this season. Brownfield saw limited action last year, but handed out 13 assists in a win over Lamar.

“Abby sat behind two seniors last year but is a great player with more tools/tricks up her sleeve than we’ve had in a few years,” said Moore. “She’s a hard worker with strong leadership and willing to make difficult decisions when they have to be made. She makes everyone of her teammates a little better.”

Webb City opens the 2017 on Aug. 22 at Springdale Har-Ber. The Lady Cards will play their home opener one week later when Bentonville West comes to the dome.
