Local duo raising thousands for charity with golf marathon

Two local golfers are turning golf into a bit of a workout on Monday, and raising more than $10,000 for Champions Committed to Kids so fair.

“Matt and I both enjoy getting out and running a little bit and staying in shape,” Eric Lankford said, “and this is the perfect way to do that.”

Lankford and Matt Elliot are going to play 150 holes in one day.

“We just figured 150 was a good number for people to pledge to for people to say, ‘150 holes in one day? Is that even possible?'” Elliott said.

It translates to a little more than eight rounds (162 holes would be nine full rounds). To do it – you’ve got to move.

“You don’t have time to take practice swings and think about the thought process behind the shot,” Elliot said. “It’s just step up to the ball, make a swing, put the club in the bag and onto the next shot.”

But Lankford says rushing does have its benefits, “Things like putting – just not overthinking. Sometimes when you’re just going out there working on speed you end up making better swings and hitting better putts.”

“But, I also anticipate shooting a few rounds with some high scores as we wear down and the day goes on,” Elliott said. “Fatigue will settle in at some point.”

They’ve enlisted three relatives to caddy for them (including both of their wives) in what they admit might be the worst job of the day.

“We’ll probably owe them something major in the end,” Elliott said. Ideally at the end of a long, but successful, day on the links.

“We’ve put in the training and we’re going to go out there and have a good time with it,” Lankford said. “Hopefully before the sun sets we’ve hit our 150-hole mark.”
