Aurora Baseball

The Houn’ Dawg baseball team came into the season ranked No. 1 in Class 4, and that is exactly where they ended up. It wasn’t an easy road through the playoffs. Aurora was down 1-0 with two outs in the seventh to Rogersville in the district championship game. Mathew Miller stepped up and hit a three-run walk-off home run to win the game. Then in the state title game, Aurora was down 3-0 in the sixth before home runs from Miller and Jeremiah Fisher keyed a comeback for a state title. The Houn’ Dawgs finished the season 27-3.

Monett Football

Monett romped through the playoffs, winning its first five games of the postseason by an average of 24.8 points per game, taking down Seneca, Cassville, Mt. Vernon, Owensville and McCluer South-Berkeley in order to set up a state championship game with perennial power Maryville. Up by two with three minutes left, Monett executed the now infamous “Iron Bowl Play” on a pass from Ian Meyer to Alex Turner to ice the game and clinch Monett’s first state football title since 1977. The Cubs finished the season 14-1.

Rogersville Boys Golf

The Rogersville boys golf team came into the second day of the Class 3 state golf tournament with a tough hill to climb. The Wildcats sat in fourth place after the first day and were six strokes back of the lead. Day 2 was a windy day where low scores were tough to come by for every team. Except the Wildcats. They posted a team score of 305, 10 strokes better than the second-best team,  in the final round to lock up the Class 3 team title by eight strokes with a total of 614.

Strafford Girls Basketball

The Strafford girls marched through the 2016-17 season with one of the most dominant performances in Missouri high-school basketball history. Strafford became the first girls team in state history to finish a year 33-0. The Lady Indians were also the first undefeated girls state champion since Oak Grove in 1992. Their season also included a Pink and White title by defeating nationally ranked Mercer County (Ken.) 76-75 in overtime. Strafford finished the season outscoring its opponents by an average of 37 points per game.
