SBU women close out regular season with blow-out loss

Bolivar Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University women’s basketball team fell to Nebraska-Kearney 93-76. SBU falls to 15-13 (7-12 MIAA) on the season.

The Bearcats would open the game on a 7-2 run with baskets coming from Caylee Richardson, Alex Botkin, and a three pointer from Aliyah Isaac. UNK would respond with an 8-3 run of their own to tie the game at 10. After a pair of Richardson free throws gave SBU a 12-10 lead, UNK would end the quarter on a 13-4 run and take a 25-14 lead into the 2nd quarter.

UNK would open up the scoring in the 2nd quarter and increase their lead to 13 at 29-16. A Megan Rosenbohm three pointer would start a 19-4 SBU run that would give them a 35-33 lead. During the run Richardson, Botkin, and Morgan Henderson would all hit three pointers. Kearney would end the run and go on a 6-2 run of their own. Another Henderson three would give SBU a 41-40 lead with 3:35 left in the half. The teams would go into halftime tied at 44.

Richardson would start the 2nd half with a jumper and SBU would regain the lead. UNK would us a 9-0 run to go up 53-46 with 7:31 remaining in the quarter. Rosenbohm would end the run with a layup and SBU would outscore UNK 10-9 to end the period, as SBU would trail 62-56.

UNK would score first in the 4th quarter, but Richardson and Rosenbohm would combine for a 7-0 run cutting the UNK lead to 65-63 with 8:58 remaining in the game. Over the next three minutes UNK would use a 12-0 run to take a 77-63 lead, but Kameron Schaaf would end the run with two free throws. A Rosenbohm three would start a 8-4 SBU run and would cut the UNK lead to 84-73, but UNK would go on to win the game 93-76.

Megan Rosenbohm led the Bearcats with 28 points while Caylee Richardson added 21. Richardson led SBU with 7 rebounds and Alex Botkin had 6. Morgan Henderson paced SBU with 7 assists. For the game SBU shot 39.7% from the field, 40.9% from beyond the arc, and 94.4% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats have earned the #10 seed in the MIAA Postseason Tournament and will travel to #6 seed Washburn on Tuesday, February 28th. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from Lee Arena in Topeka, Kansas.
