SBU women come close in upset bid

Bolivar, Mo.  – The SBU Women put 4 in double figures in 69-63 loss to #10 Pittsburg State. With the loss SBU drops to 14-10 (6-9 MIAA) on the season.

Aliyah Isaac would start the game with back to back layups to give SBU a 4-0 lead, but Pittsburg State would respond with a basket cutting the SBU lead to 4-3 with 7:37 remaining in the quarter. Caylee Richardson then hit a jumper, followed by a Megan Rosenbohm layup, and another Richardson basket would stretch the SBU lead to 10-5. Over the final 4:56 of the quarter Pittsburg State would outscore SBU 9-7, but the Bearcats would take a 17-14 lead into the 2nd quarter.

Pittsburg State would hit consecutive baskets to start the 2nd quarter and it would give the Gorillas their first lead of the game at 19-17. However, SBU would respond with a 6-2 run of their own which would start with two layups from Richardson and Mackenzie Skupa would connect on two free throws as SBU would lead 23-21 with 6:16 remaining in the half. After two buckets from the Gorillas, Natalie O’Keefe would convert on an old fashioned three point play to give SBU a 26-25 lead. Pittsburg State would end the half on an 8-2 run and would take a 33-28 lead into the half.

Rosenbohm would open up the 3rd quarter with a layup followed by a Richardson layup and SBU would cut the PSU lead to 33-32 with 9:13 left in the third quarter. Morgan Henderson would start a 15-6 run for the Bearcats, and during the run SBU would get baskets from Isaac, Skupa, Rosenbohm, as well as two free throws from Alex Botkin. SBU would head into the 4th quarter leading 47-46.

The 4th quarter would start out with baskets from Isaac and Rosenbohm to put the Bearcats up 51-46 with 8:46 left in the contest. Pittsburg State would go on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 51, however SBU would respond with a two Skupa jumpers and would regain the lead at 55-54. The Gorillas would go on an 8-2 run giving them a 62-57 lead with 4:31 remaining in the game, but SBU would respond behind a pair of Skupa free throws and a Richardson layup to cut the PSU leas to 62-61. Pittsburg State would end the game on a 7-2 run as the Bearcats would fall 69-63.

The Bearcats were led in scoring by Megan Rosenbohm who scored 16, while Caylee Richardson and Aliyah Isaac add 14 each and Mackenzie Skupa added 10. Skupa led SBU with 6 rebounds, while Richardson and Alex Botkin each added 5. Isaac paced SBU with 5 assists.

SBU will return to action Thursday, February 16 when they take on #11 Emporia State. Tipoff is set for 5:30PM from Emporia, Kansas.
