Southwest Baptist women upset No. 8 Central Oklahoma

Jeff Weseloh (SBU Sports Information) Edmond, Okla. – Megan Rosenbohm’s 14 fourth quarter points led to the SBU women’s basketball victory at #8 Central Oklahoma on Saturday 76-73. With the win the Bearcats improve to 13-9 (5-8 MIAA) while handing UCO only their second loss of the season.

Central Oklahoma opened up the game shooting strong from the field, connecting on their first three shots, as SBU trailed 8-2 with 7:46 remaining in the opening quarter. The Bearcats responded with a 5-0 run from Calyee Richardson, who scored SBU’s first seven points of the game, and a Richardson layup with 5:54 left in the quarter tied the game at 12-12. UCO pushed their lead back to four at 22-18, but an 8-0 SBU run which was fueled by two Kameron Schaaf three’s gave SBU a 26-22 lead heading in the second quarter.

The Bearcats extended their run to 14-0 after a jumper from Morgan Henderson and four straight points from Natalie O’Keefe to give SBU a 32-22 lead with 7:28 remaining in the half. The Bronchos answered back with a 10-1 run, as SBU’s lead was cut to 33-32 with 3:43 left in the half. A layup from Alex Botkin extended the Bearcat lead to three (35-32) before SBU would eventually going into the half trailing 38-37.

Opening up the second half Southwest Baptist once again re-took the lead by using a 9-0 run to take a 46-38 lead with 6:46 remaining in the third quarter. A layup from Richardson put the Bearcats ahead of the Bronchos again, and back-to-back layups from Rosenbohm and a three from Richardson extended the SBU advantage. Schaaf connected on a layup with 4:44 to go in the quarter to put SBU up 52-43, but UCO ended the quarter on a 9-0 run as the two teams went into the final period tied 52-52.

The Bearcats and Bronchos exchanged buckets for the opening three and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, as the two teams were tied 59-59. Mackenzie Skupa then hit three straight buckets for the Bearcats, giving SBU a 66-59 lead before Central Oklahoma cut the SBU lead to two at 67-65 with 2:41 remaining. Rosenbohm had a 7-0 run to extend SBU’s lead back to eight at 73-65 with 56 seconds remaining, and a pair of free throws from Richardson with 13 seconds remaining gave the Bearcats a 76-73 lead. A three from UCO a the buzzer didn’t fall, as the Bearcats knocked off #8 Central Oklahoma 76-73.

Megan Rosenbohm had an outstanding game for the Bearcats, scoring a game high 23 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, to go along with 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Caylee Richardson added 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Kameron Schaaf had 11 points off of the bench. As a team SBU shot 51.8% from the field, 46.7% from beyond the arc, and 61.1% from the line.

SBU will return home on Thursday, February 9 when they host Missouri Southern. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center.
