Emma Skornia’s leg is just fine and her college future is set.

The Catholic Fightin’ Irish soccer senior signed her national letter of intent with Missouri State University on Wednesday in the school library, alongside family, friends and classmates.

Skornia missed most of her junior season with a broken leg. She was first team all-state and regional offensive player of the year as a sophomore.

“When I see anyone, it’s, ‘How’re you doing? How’s the leg? When are you going to be back to normal?’ All the time,” Skornia said. “The leg’s great. I played all of my club season that started in the fall in November. I’m ready to go.”

Skornia has been a starter at Catholic since her freshman year and verbally committed to Missouri State last year.

Skornia’s the latest female Springfield soccer player to continue her playing career at Missouri State, following in the steps of Glendale alums Molly Brew and Alix Opfer. Opfer has recently been an assistant coach with Catholic’s team.

“When I was looking for a school, I wasn’t just looking for a team that I felt I would fit in with, but also a campus I felt comfortable at and especially a place that had the right academic environment for me,” Skornia said. “Missouri State did all three of those things, so that was what really made the decision for me.”

Skornia and her Lady Irish teammates could be poised for a big season. The Lady Irish return the majority of their varsity lineup from a team that won 16 games but was ravaged by injuries and finished as district runner-up to Bolivar.

Catholic will feature two more players who earned all-state honors at some point in their careers: juniors Brinn Cooper and Peyton McNabb. McNabb missed all of last season with a preseason knee injury.

“I’m really excited,” Skornia said. “Last year we had a lot of injuries. Everyone’s back to normal and healthy again, so I’m really hoping it’sgoing to be a great year.”
