Evangel splits games at Avila

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Evangel men’s basketball team used a big second half to run away from Avila for a 75-80 victory Wednesday night in conference action.

The Crusaders never trailed in the game building a 32-27 lead at halftime. Evangel came out in the second half red-hot using a 16-2 run over the first 11 minutes.

Evangel forced 20 Eagle turnovers and finished with 13 steals in the win. The Crusaders also made 10 three-pointers including going 7-of-13 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Josiah Thomas led the Crusaders with a season-high 15 points while adding three assists. Thomas was joined in double figures by Nick Yocum who tallied 11 points as both Yocum and Thomas finished with three treys each.

Jacob Anyieth led Avila with 15 points and three rebounds.

Meanwhile, a hot shooting Avila women’s basketball team knocked off Evangel, 79-65, Wednesday night in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

Avila built an early 39-20 lead at halftime and held on in the second half after shooting 50 percent from the field, while the Crusaders shot just 35 percent. Evangel also went just 1-of-16 from behind the three-point line in the loss.

Senior Allison Swanson posted her fifth straight double-double adding 16 points to go with 14 rebounds for Evangel. She was joined in double figures by Taylor Longley and Mackenzie Farmer who each scored 11 points.

The Eagles were led by Raven Bunn who scored 16 points for Avila.
