Evangel earns a split at Graceland

LAMONI, Iowa – A cold second half was too much for the Evangel University men’s basketball team to overcome falling 70-78 at Graceland on Monday night.

The Crusaders shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and trailed by just one point at intermission. However, Evangel shot just 30 percent in the second half as Graceland was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

Evangel knocked down nine three-pointers in the loss as Graceland out-rebounded the Crusaders 47-31. The Yellowjackets were led by Jeremy Deemer’s double-double with 19 points and 14 boards.

Josiah Thomas led the Crusaders with 13 points as teammates Josue Levy and Richard Chapman each finished with 12 points.

The Evangel women’s basketball team held off Graceland for an 86-81 victory Monday night in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

The Crusaders got a game-high 22 points from Alison Jarrell while Samantha Williams posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

The game went back and forth but Evangel forced the Yellowjackets into 17 turnovers and finished with 10 steals. The Crusaders also scored 20 points off turnovers in the win as Reggine Brown and Madi Johnson also finished in double figures.

Brown added 11 points while Johnson finished with 13 points and tallied four assists for Evangel.

Graceland was led by Tristen McFeders and Gabes Lapinski who each scored 21 points.
