Six Crusaders score in double figures in 25-point win
Hot shooting helped the Evangel men’s basketball team roll past Avila, 92-67, Wednesday night in Heart of America Conference action from the Ashcroft Center.
The Crusaders never trailed as they built an early 18 point lead and holding the Eagles to single digits over the first 11 minutes of the game with a 27-9 lead. Avila would cut into the Evangel lead the final eight minutes but never pull closer than 15 points as the Crusaders shot 60 percent in the first half.
The second half was all Evangel as the home team led by as many as 30 points. The Crusaders knocked down eight three-pointers and dominated the glass, winning the rebounding battle, 45-27.
Six Crusaders scored in double figures led by 14 points from Jacob Smith on 6-of-7 shooting as he also added six boards.
Josiah Thomas added 13 points as Cody Geiger and Richard Chapman each tallied 12 points. Chapman added five points and three assists off the bench. Evangel also finished with 14 assists in the win.
Trey Bales finished with a game-high 27 points to lead Avila as Jimmy Dekraai was also in double figures with 10 points.

Swanson and Jarrell lead Lady Crusaders past Avila
The Evangel women’s basketball pulled away from Avila Wednesday night for a 74-60 victory in Heart of American Conference action.
The Crusaders were led by Allison Swanson and Alison Jarrell who each chipped in with 15 points. Jarrell added five three-pointers in the win.
Avila shot 49 percent from the field but went 9-of-18 from the free throw line as the Crusaders were 20-of-25 from the stripe and also shot 42 percent from the field. Taylor Longley was 5-of-6 from the line as she added 14 points and four assists for Evangel.
Evangel, who won its third straight, also won the rebounding battle 37-25 as they tallied 11 second-chance points to Avila’s two.
Avila was led by Raven Bunn who finished with 28 points and seven boards for the Eagles.
