Stockton, MO – With both teams locked in tight battles for playoff position, the Stockton Tigers and the Marionville Comets knew going in every single touchdown, every single play, every single decision made would affect the standings in their respective districts by game’s end.

The Tigers celebrated their Senior Night with a convincing 41-20 Mid-Lakes Conference victory, and in the process vaulted from sixth to fourth in Class 2 District 4, earning a home game next week against Versailles.

The first half was almost all Stockton (5-4, 3-3 Mid-Lakes), as the Pride jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and had the Comets (2-7, 1-5) back on their heels. With 3:51 left before half, Marionville coach Paden Grubbs was flagged twice for unsportsmanlike conduct and disqualified from the game for arguing a penalty call on his team. Stockton scored its third touchdown shortly thereafter on a 15-yard pass from Jake Wheeler to Justin Pfeifer to go up 21-0.

However, the Comets rallied behind their coach and hit paydirt twice to draw within 21-14. That would be as close as Marionville would get as Stockton would add three more scores to Marionville’s one for the final margin.

Pfeifer was the offensive star of the night for Stockton, with an amazing 11 catches for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wheeler was 18 of 27 passing for 218 yards, 3 TDs, and 2 interceptions. Mason Brown added 69 yards rushing and a TD on 18 carries while Brice Bird chipped in with 11 carries for 67 yards and a TD.

For Marionville, junior quarterback Ryan Mayberry carried the bulk of the load, with 69 yards and 2 TDs rushing on 13 carries, and 4 of 7 passing for 83 yards, a TD, and an interception. But Mayberry was also sacked 5 times for 33 yards as the Stockton defensive line was rushing him constantly, forcing him to rush several throws.

Tiger coach Shad Edwards said, “I thought everybody showed up to play tonight, but I was really impressed with the defense. I thought Skylar Fishburn and Bo Walker had their best games this year. They’ve been kind of coming on, and I thought they really did a good job.

“Cahill Creek is like a wrecking ball; like there is no one who can block him. He just sheds people off. He’s a kid that came out this year and has been a pleasure to coach.”

The loss dropped Marionville behind winless Cabool into the 6th seed in Class 1 District 2. The Comets will travel to nearby Pierce City for their district quarterfinal.
