BOLIVAR, Mo. — The 20th ranked SBU Football team couldn’t complete a fourth quarter comeback against Truman State on Saturday afternoon, as they fell 26-16. With the loss SBU drops to 5-1 (3-1 GLVC) on the season.

The SBU offense struggled to get things going in the first half, as Truman built up a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and a 23-0 lead at the half.

In the third quarter the Bearcats started to find success on offense. The Bearcats picked up third first downs on the drive, advancing to the Truman 35, but were forced to punt. After Truman responded with a field goal, the Bearcat offense went to work. TJ Edwards opened up the drive with an 8-yard pass to Scottie Wilson before hitting Kendrick Payne with a 37-yard pass. After another short pass from Edwards to Payne, Bubba Jenkins had a 10-yard rush to put the ball on the Truman 6. After a pair of incomplete passes, Edwards hit Wilson with a 6-yard touchdown strike to put the Bearcats on the board. On the two-point conversion, Kendrick Payne took a handoff from Edwards and then found Edwards wide open in the endzone for the two point conversion as SBU trailed 26-8.

The SBU defense forced a big three-and-out, as the offense went back to work at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Edwards found success through the air, connecting with four different receivers before the Bearcats lost a fumble on the Truman 2-yardline. The Bearcats once again held strong, as Truman missed a 40-yard field goal attempt.

The Bearcats used quick strikes from Edwards, and short runs from Jenkins to advance the ball to the Truman 21 yardline. On fourth-and-three from the 21, Edwards hit Wilson with a 21-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field, to pull SBU within 12. Edwards then hit fullback Tamario Beaugard in the endzone for the two-point conversion as SBU trailed 26-16. The SBU defense held TSU to a negative 5 yards on the following drive, giving SBU the ball back with 2:17 remaining. However, TSU forced another turnover, as the Bearcats ran out of time in the eventual 26-16 loss.
