Avila rally knocks off Evangel

Phillip Dowden, (Evangel Sports Information) KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A wild finish Tuesday evening saw Avila University complete an intense rally to knock off the Evangel University men’s soccer team, 3-2, in Heart Conference action.

Evangel built an early 1-0 lead near the end of the first half when Caleb Rodriguez finished a header into the net off a Dom Federici corner kick. The Crusaders would take the lead into halftime, however, the Eagles would tie the game in the 65th minute on a goal from Louis Gallagher.

The goal tied the game just before the match entered a weather delay with 6:43 left to play. The final six minutes would see three goals including the game winner for Avila in the 86th minute.

After a goal from the Eagles in the 84th minute, Evangel’s Kyler Moore netted his seventh goal of the season. However, the Eagles would answer less than two minutes later when a throw in from Richie Lane deflected off the Crusaders goalkeeper into the net for the game-winning goal.

– The two goals for Evangel were the most goals scored in a Heart Conference match since the program’s inception. The Crusaders had scored one goal three times.

– The goal from Caleb Rodriguez snapped a streak of three scoreless periods for the Crusaders.

– Kyler Moore is now the team leader in goals for Evangel while Rodriguez is third with four goals this season.

Evangel closes road action on Friday as they travel to Culver-Stockton for an 8:15 scheduled start.
