Forsyth’s Layn Hurst breaks national record

Forsyth senior Layn Hurst has been raking ever since he stepped to the plate as a freshman. Now he's got a national record to prove it.

He collected his 291st, 292nd, and 293rd runs batted in Tuesday's 8-4 win over Mt Vernon. That's more than Drew Henson, former Yankee and Michigan product, who the National High School Federation credits with the most high school runs batted in with 290 between 1994-1998.

"Honestly my teammates and I were relieved when it happened," Hurst said. He only knew he was closing in on the record when coaches told him about it late last week.

The record breaker came on a sac fly hit deep to the out field. "Regular games, I wouldn't have been as happy about a sac fly," Hurst said. Then he added to it with two more before the game ended.

Forsyth is waiting on the winner of Pleasant Hope/Springfield Catholic in Class 3 District 11. With at least one more game to add to his incredible statistic, Hurst says the pressure is off. "It's out of my mind."

But he's not done. He says he's also one hit away from tying NHSF's hits record of 277.

The senior still has lots of big hits in his future even when the Panthers season ends. He's heading to Mineral Area College, and hopes to catch on with a four-year school after that.
