Ozarks Sports Zone has learned sixth-year Evangel head football coach Brenton Illum has been fired from his position at the university.  Administration informed the team this evening.  Illum was not present.

“It is regretful that I must inform you that Coach Brenton Illum has been dismissed from his position as head football coach of Evangel University," said Dr. Michael McCorcle, provost and vice president for academic affairs.  "Coach Chuck Hepola will assume leadership of the team as interim head coach, and we will begin the process of hiring a new head coach immediately.”

“We are proud of our football program and our great players that show athletic skill on the field and a strong dedication to Christ and community off the field," said Director of Atletics Dennis McDonald.  "The assistant coaching staff have all been instrumental in the development of our players and the program, and their work will continue next year.  Please be in prayer for our students and their coaches during this time of transition.”

Illum, a 1998 Evangel graduate and former player, went 3-8 (0-5 in HAAC) last season.  He was 27-36 overall.

“I’ve given my life to Evangel football,” said Illum via phone call.  “I’ve probably given too much.  It’s affecting me physically, spiritually and emotionally.  It’s time to make a change.”

“I’ve made myself unhealthy and have just given too much to the job.  It’s a labor of love.”

Illum, 39, returned to lead the Crusaders in December of 2009.  He led the team to its first winning season in six years in 2012 as the Crusaders finished in the NAIA Top 25.

He also served as interim Director of Athletics in 2014-15, taking over leadership of the department after David Stair’s retirement.

Illum intends to continue his football coaching career.

“I’m 39 years old and I’ve got 30 more left in this profession,” said Illum.  “I’ll be a better man down the road.”

Because this is a confidential personnel matter, Evangel did not release further information on why Illum was dismissed.
