Evangel men lose 20th game to #9 Wm. Penn

Springfield, Mo. – Ninth ranked William Penn scored 50 second half points erasing a three point deficit at halftime to win at Evangel 83-64 on Saturday in the Ashcroft Center.
 
The Crusaders led most of the first half and owned a 36-33 lead at the intermission. The Statesmen came out of the locker room and outscored Evangel 22-3 in the first eight minutes of the second half.
 
“We did a lot of the things we needed to do to win during the first half,” said Evangel head coach Steve Jenkins. “But William Penn is explosive and in the second half, they played like a team determined to just ram the ball right down our throats…and they pretty much did.  I’m a disappointed we didn’t respond better.”
 
William Penn shot 63 percent in the second half going 22 for 35 from the field. Statesmen guard Dondre Alexander came off the bench to score 16 points putting in 13 in the second half. Steven Roundtree added 16 while Brady Burford had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Nick Yocum led Evangel with 17 points hitting five three-pointers.
 
Evangel dropped to 6-20 and 5-13 in the Heart of America conference. It marks Evangel’s first 20-loss season since 1996. The Crusaders entered the year with a streak of 10 straight 20-win seasons. William Penn improved to 21-5 and 14-4 in the league.
 
The Crusaders are home again on Wednesday when they host Missouri Valley. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. at the Ashcroft Center.
