1 Awards: Roebuck rides successful season to Missouri St.

Erin Roebuck isn’t easily satisfied.

The Springfield Catholic sprinter expects to win every time she steps on the track.

So, when she failed to reach the finals in the 200M dash and the 4x200M relay at the 2012 Class 3 State Track meet, she was more than disappointed.

“Last year I didn’t finish the way I wanted at state,” said Roebuck. “I told myself that I didn’t want that feeling again. I wanted to dedicate myself to training and put myself in the best position possible and be successful. It was a daily reminder of what I was working for.”

That work started just a few weeks after returning from Jefferson City.

Roebuck began meeting with Shem Johnson of Primal Fitness regularly, adding more strength training to her workouts.

“He got me in great shape throughout the summer and heading into the spring,” said Roebuck. “We do a ton of strength training. We also do a lot of cardio, plyometics and abs.”

In addition to increased workouts, Roebuck also made changes to her diet.

“I finally figured out how to diet properly and keeping track of what I put in my body,” said Roebuck. “What you eat really does make a difference. There is no comparison to where I am now to where I was.”

Roebuck also began working with noted sprint coach Steve Boyce on her form.

All the changes paid off. Roebuck returned to Jefferson City and took second in the 400M dash in what was a competitive race.

With six runners bunched up in the last 50 meters, the well prepared Roebuck found her way to the front of the pack with a time of 58.16.

“I felt pretty good about that race; I put my heart into it,” said Roebuck. “Towards the end we were a little bunched up, but in my mind I kept telling myself I have to push through it. It worked for me.”

Roebuck also finished sixth in the 200M dash, making her all-state in both the 400M and 200M.

“I had been trying to get to the finals for the past three years,” said Roebuck.  “I have been working a lot more in the offseason with more condition and more weights. This year it finally clicked. It really helped prepare me for the season. I was also doing indoor meets which helps a lot. I wouldn’t be where I am without all the training I did last summer.”

All of her hard work also caught the eye of Boyce, who is also Missouri State’s Track and Field coach, resulting in her receiving a spot on the Lady Bears Track and Field team.

“It is exciting,” said Roebuck. “I never thought I would be able to run at the Division 1 level. I started working with Coach Boyce in the winter and he saw something in me and had enough faith in me to offer me a scholarship.”

Even with all she has been able to accomplish in the last year, there are still bigger things ahead of Erin Roebuck.

Although she’s happy, she’s still hungry for more.

Never satisfied.
